My scientific interest at that time, was to study the quality of life of patients with chronic inflammatory bowel disease (1-6) but also the exploration of the postoperative gastrointestinal dysfunction frequently observed after abdominal surgery (7-16). I extended my knowledge in this field during a 2-years fellowship at the world-famous Mayo Clinic Rochester, Minnesota, USA (17-26), where I also performed several studies investigating quality of life and function after surgery for colorectal cancer (27,\u00a028). After my return from the USA, I started to work at the Department of General, Visceral, Transplant and Thoracic Surgery at the Ludwig Maximilians University Munich. Along with a broad surgical training I had my focus on colorectal surgery, being in charge of the colorectal outpatient clinic and becoming the coordinator of the Colorectal Cancer Center at the University of Munich. Furthermore, I extended my skills in minimal-invasive surgical techniques for the treatment of benign and malignant bowel diseases (e.g. diverticulitis, chronic inflammatory bowel disease, and colorectal cancer) as well as for the treatment of hernias and other conditions. As an academic surgeon, I continued my clinical scientific work, where I studied quality of life in patients after surgery for chronic inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal cancer (29-35). Using my knowledge and skills acquired at the Mayo clinic Rochester, I started my own research group and became the head of the \u201cIntestinal Physiology\u201d working group at our university where we explored postoperative changes in the neural control of bowel function (36-46). My work was continuously founded by the German government, honored with several awards, and I became a member of the Academy of Excellence of the German Society of Surgery.<\/p><p>In January 2015, I became the head of the department of Surgery at the Klinik Josephinum together with Dr. Wolfgang Bittmann. In close cooperation with our colleagues from the Department of Gastroenterology and Oncology, we are treating our patients with a very close connection between surgeon and patient and in a very patient-friendly environment. After his retirement, Dr. Irmgard Weindl followed Dr. Bittmann in June 2018.<\/p><p>After leaving the Ludwig Maximilians University Munich, I continue my academic work as a Professor with lectures for medical students on a regular basis and I continue to give presentations on national and international medical conferences.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-tab-title
