Prof. Kasparek – Specialist in Hernias and Abdominal Wall Surgery

Prof. Dr. Michael Kasparek has successfully qualified as a specialist in abdominal wall surgery and now holds the Europe-wide recognized title of “Abdominal Wall Surgeon” (AWS), awarded by the Union Européenne des Médecins Spécialistes (UEMS). This makes him a Fellow of the European Board of Surgeons (FEBS) — one of the highest distinctions for surgical expertise in Europe.

Admission to this demanding examination requires many years of thorough training as well as extensive practical experience in the treatment of abdominal wall hernias. Regular participation in specialist congresses and continuing education must also be demonstrated. At this year’s congress of the European Hernia Society in Porto, Portugal, Prof. Kasparek successfully passed both the written and oral components of the examination. He thus belongs to an exclusive group of currently only around 20 surgeons in Germany who have passed this examination and are authorized to use this additional designation.

This personal qualification complements the already established Center of Competence for Hernia Surgery at Klinik Josephinum, which was certified in 2024 by the German Society for General and Visceral Surgery (DGAV). Together, both distinctions stand for hernia care at the highest level, in accordance with the latest scientific findings and using the most modern surgical techniques. Maintaining the certification furthermore requires a commitment to continuous professional development and specialist exchange — with colleagues in Germany as well as with international experts.

At the center of all this is always the individual patient. Prof. Kasparek places particular emphasis on personalized consultation, surgery tailored to the patient’s specific situation, and personal follow-up care. He puts it in his own words:

“Operations for abdominal wall and inguinal hernias are among the most common procedures in Germany. The focus is always on patients’ quality of life after the procedure. That is why it is important to us to always stay up to date and to be able to offer the most modern surgical techniques — for the best possible care of every individual patient.”

We specialize in minimally invasive colon surgery and would be very happy to advise you.

Small, Specialized, and Efficient – The Future of Healthcare?

Prof. Dr. Michael Kasparek was invited to speak at the German Surgery Congress (Deutscher Chirurgie Kongress) in Munich on March 27, 2025, on the topic “Small, Specialized, and Efficient – The Future of Healthcare?”.

The German healthcare system is in a state of upheaval. Contrary to other government initiatives, it is vital to preserve structures like the Josephinum in the future to maintain the best possible medical and personal care for our patients. Prof. Kasparek’s lecture addresses the new hurdles for patient care resulting from the healthcare reform—some of which were introduced in a very rushed manner—such as the increased pressure toward outpatient treatment due to the introduction of new flat-rate fees (Hybrid-DRGs) and the consequences of the Hospital Care Improvement Act (Krankenhausversorgungsverbesserungsgesetz – KHVVG).

We are firmly convinced that clinics like the Josephinum must be preserved to guarantee medically optimal, dignified, modern, and timely care for our patients.

Hernias – When the Abdominal Wall Gives Way: Modern Procedures for Inguinal, Umbilical, and Incisional Hernias!

As part of our health lecture series, Prof. Dr. Michael Kasparek will be speaking about hernias on March 19, 2025, at 7:00 PM.

Important to know: Hernias can affect anyone, and no hernia resolves on its own. Abdominal wall hernias occur most frequently in the groin (inguinal hernias); the hernial orifices can enlarge, and there is a risk of bowel entrapment. As a certified Center of Excellence for Hernia Surgery, we will inform you about how to recognize hernias and which modern treatment methods, such as minimally invasive surgical techniques, are available.

DGAV_Zertifizierungssignet-Komp-Hernien

Following an intensive audit, we have been certified as a Center of Excellence for Hernia Surgery by the German Society for General and Visceral Surgery (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Allgemein- und Viszeralchirurgie – DGAV) since August 2024. This certification requires a high volume of hernia repair surgeries, a high level of expertise from the surgeons, as well as the structural conditions necessary for safe patient care. Furthermore, a highly low-complication postoperative course with an excellent outcome for the patient must be proven, which is easily possible for us through the continuous monitoring of our patients’ surgical success. We are delighted that our team fully meets these requirements and can offer you high-quality care for abdominal wall hernias (inguinal, umbilical, incisional hernias, etc.). Please feel free to come in for a consultation!
